The Charter Support Unit began as an objective of Florida’s 2011-16 Charter Schools Program (CSP) grant with the United States Department of Education. The grant proposed the implementation a “Charter Support Unit” (CSU) for the purpose of providing short-term, intensive, and targeted support for start-up and new charter schools. The grant detailed that the CSU would be staffed by experienced educational professionals with expertise in curriculum, instruction, finance, governance and leadership. Accordingly, the mission of the Florida CSU is to provide support to charter schools in the first few years of operation and to be available on short notice to conduct site-assessments and provide recommendations for charter school improvement. The Florida Department of Education contracted with Building Hope to operate the CSU and provide these services to schools throughout Florida. Building Hope has continued to operate the Support Unit since then. In 2018 the Florida Legislature approved an appropriations bill to continue the operation of the Florida Charter Support Unit. efforts.
In 2018 the Federal Department of Education awarded Building Hope an additional grant to expand the services of the Charter Support Unit to additional locations throughout the country. The additional expanded CSU is meant to target services with regards to the facilities needs of schools in Texas, New York, Washington DC and rural schools throughout the country.
